Recently, I have been researching a story idea that had me looking into tarot. Tarot is a deck of cards that some are able to ascertain what the messages are hidden behind them. It intrigued me at how the people were able to pull messages from the images on the cards. The deck is filled with beautiful artwork no doubt, but what leads one card to symbolize one thing over another is unknown to me. I talked with other friends, but they also were unknowing. It seems odd that not many know how tarot works when it is a common medium for those connected to the spiritually in a nontraditional way. That is where this little gem comes in.
I have found another treasure for those completing their NaNoWriMo: Writing Your Story! challenge or want help improving their writing . It is called The Complete Handbook of Novel Writing by Writer’s Digest. It is a bulky book that can intimidate, but if you get past the size. It is an uncut gem to improving your writing skill.
One of my goals for the year has been to improve my writing. It may seem like a lofty goal, but there are thousands of books about writing in general. One of my favorite books that I have used in helping improve my writing is the Everything Guide to Writing Your First Novel.
I think the best advice is how to format your writing presented within the book. It explains different plot structures that authors can use to write their ideas into a full story. It also offers ideas on character creation, which is an important element to story telling. Each aspect of writing is written with details and simple language for anyone to understand. The guide is easy to use and laid out in a logical manner for the beginners.
Everyone has a story to tell or something to teach the world about, but to do that means having to address the public. However, public speaking is scary. If we could, many of us would try to avoid it at all cost. TED Talks have created an art form out of public speaking despite the challenges many have faced. The videos of the speeches are watched over and over again. Speeches that have inspired and motivated others to change the world or advance more into the field. So what is the secret of the success of TED? I would suggest reading TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking by Chris Anderson to discover that answer.
