As a native Texan, I have a deep love for Mexican Food. FYI, Mexican food is made up of more than margaritas and burritos. It is packed full of color and flavor. It is like the vibrancy of life are contained in each individual bite. So I was excited to explore one of the best Mexican restaurants in Dallas, Texas at Jalisco Norte. The first thing to note about this place is the modern city vibe contained within the walls while the purely authentic music pouring from the speakers into the street. So get ready for some of the best Mexican food you will ever have.
The best way to start a fun night of food and friends at a nice restaurant is with a couple of drinks. Try any number of their cocktails as long as it contains their signature mezcal. My personal favorite is The Skinny. It is the best margarita I have ever had.
For an unique appetizer that you cannot find anywhere else, I would suggest trying the bone marrow topped with Elote or Mexican Street Corn. It has deep notes of savory and peppery after taste. It is amazingly tasty and fulfilling. I would have easily eaten 2 or 3 of these.
I love the fresh ceviche. It was spicy and refreshing. It was a little fire-y but that is what your margarita is for. *Wink* *Wink*
If you order the ceviche make sure to order this sweet kale salad to help cool the spicy heat from the pepper extracts. If you are not counteracting the sweetness, the salad maybe way to sweet on it’s own.
For my main course I would choose between two very special and unique modern Mexican dishes. Osso Busco is one of my all time favorite dishes. It is made up of a fantastic cut of meat and special sauce that enhance the bright flavors that this cut is stewed in for hours and hours. You can see this dish in it’s full glory in the picture above.
The other main dish I would order would be the Pollo con Mole. Mole is one of those sauces that very few have mastery of. I am happy to report that Jalisco Norte has the best mole sauce that I have ever eaten. It was rich, pinch of heat, savory, and full of umami. My best recommendation on how to eat this is to grab a tortilla grab a slice of chicken dipped in mole and a spoon full of rice and vegetables to top it all off.
The best way to finish a meal off is with dessert. Jalisco Norte has dessert options from typical tres leches to other yummy creations. I personally recommend the Mexican Lemon Tart that is not overly sweet and tart. The meringue little droplets are a nice touch and crumbs add the necessary texture would need.
Jalisco Norte is the perfect place to rediscover Mexican food in a more modern context. It does have the tacos and other typical Mexican creations but they have their own twist upon it. It was ranked as one of the top 50 restaurants in Dallas by D Magazine. Now, I can clearly see that Jalisco Norte is deserving of this title. I think my tummy would agree to. So go forth and discover Jalisco Norte tonight!
